2009 in books

I just finished my first book for 2010 and realised I didn’t post my read book of 2009. Although I didn’t read that much, I picked good ones. Not all, of course, that would be inhuman but still….I did good overall.

year/month author stars title

cocktail time – p.g. wodehouse

Frederick, Earl of Ickenham, is still a boy at heart. He is loud, some would say obnoxious, optimistic and sociable very present. But when he hangs out of a window in his favorite pub and catapults the hat off of his brother in law, a grumpy barrister, he couldn’t have imagined what kind of actions he sets in motion. Actions he will be in over his head, but also enjoys tremendously. Who could have thought that a catapult could result in a scandalous bestseller, a film script, strange romantic entanglements and the awakening of a dodgy couple.

the adventures of huckleberry finn – mark twain

Huckleberry Finn, the friend of Tom Sawyer in his own adventure. A true boy’s adventure.
He has it bad with his father and when things really get from bad to worse, he decides to stage his own death and go south in his boat. On his way he meets a slave he knows, who is going towards his freedom. As of then they travel together. They become friends and look out for each other even when it is made hard by people and circumstances.
Will they both reach their goal?

fred the clown – roger langridge

What to say about Frederick T. Clown, alias Fred the Clown? He’s weird, he smells and he’s an idiot. The ultimate antihero. In this graphic novel Fred gives his ten steps to happiness. And it will become clear the road to this goal is a hard and long one.
This picture for example is from step 6: never stop searching for true love:

But never give up hope people!
It seems Fred doesn’t, so why would you?
A very comforting thought that when even such a character as Fred can bounce back,
so could everybody else.
Isn’t that the ultimate happiness?

At the blog of a colleague I saw she “wiki-ed” her birthday.
Cool idea, so I had to copy her, sorry Sophie; it was completely your idea.

Here are some literary connections to my birthday:

events:
1947 – The Diary of Anne Frank is published.
2009 – Canadian author Alice Munro collects the third Man Booker International Prize at a ceremony at Trinity College Dublin.
